11plusschool approach
11plusschool has been preparing Year 5 students for the grammar school 11plus entrance exam at the beginning of Year 6 for entry to North Halifax and Crossley Heath Grammar Schools since 2012. Using his unique experience from being Head of Maths at both grammar schools, Geoff Storer knows what it takes to be a successful grammar school student and knows what it takes to pass the 11plus entrance exam. All of the 11plusschool tutors are grammar and high school teachers and specialise in one or more of the four topic areas mirrored in the exam; Maths, English, Non-Verbal and Verbal Reasoning.
Traditional high school model
All classes take place in a school so students are familiar and comfortable with a traditional learning environment including interactive whiteboards. The two hour class is based on a high school model with three x 40 minute sessions for Maths, English and NVR/VR.
Zoom classes
When we are unable to access our schools physcially, we are well equipped to move our teaching to Zoom. We quickly transitioned to Zoom teaching after a week during the first lockdown in 2020 and successfully delivered our courses from April to July. Our record results in 2020 are testiment to the quality of our sustained teaching both face to face and online. At the moment we do not provide Zoom classes but is something we will keep reviewing.
Class Size
Our classes never exceed ten.
Homework
Homework is issued every week in each area using our online homework system; approximately 25 minutes for each topic. Homework is marked autmatically with feedback provided immediately. The questioning style follows that of the 11plus entrance exam, providing multiple choice options for each question.
Assessments
We assess students in November, March and June based on their learning to date. After each assessment, the children will review the tests with their teachers and receive feedback and advice as to how to improve test scores. After our assessment in March, parents are invited into a session to review the test with their child; this session is incredibly insightful as to the skills required to be successful in the 11+ exam. We believe it is essential to give parents honest feedback and if we have concerns, Fiona will speak directly to parents after each assessment.
